Virgin Skiers No More

I awoke this morning, frightened to move, anticipating the agony I would feel in my body... and yes, I ached all over, from my shoulders down to my calves!  I had to move though, because the call of nature was blaring its horns in my bladder and I did not have a bed pan handy...

Blue Mountains Resort

We had returned yesterday night after 2 days away skiing at the Blue Mountains Resort in Collingwood, Ontario.  Never having been skiing before, we were unsure what to expect, despite having read the advice page off the Blue Mountain website.

Ski village at night

We had pre-booked accommodation,  ski lift passes and a private lesson. We read up on what to wear, what not to wear and thought we would learn about the rest when we got there.  What we have learned from our first skiing experience is :-
1) Get to the resort as early as you can to check-in, even if your room is not ready, be prepared for long check-in queues, to get your lift passes, if you have purchased them with accommodation.
2) Get to the equipment rentals early, to avoid long queues, read up on rental procedure before you arrive, for this resort, we had to input each of our details at the rentals check in, before going to the counter, so they have record of your weight, age and shoe size (for boot rentals)

We arrived at 11.30, 2 hours ahead of our booked lesson, but was still rushing to get to the lesson on time. The queues for the rental was madness,  and not knowing what to do, added to the stress. Luckily there were some stewards around that were able to get us ahead of the queues as we had a lesson booked.

We got our equipment, was rushing as we didn't want to be late for our lesson and Dave and Jasmine ended up with boots that weren't a good fit.  I was the first to get my equipment on and went to make sure the instructors knew we were there.  I was greeted by a lovely instructor, who watched me struggle to walk in my boots and carry my skis and ski poles. What must I have looked like??? A sight! He knew straight away I was a virgin skier.  I said, I've not done this before....He said with humour in his voice, what clues have we here that give you away?  Hahahaha. I hoped he was going to be our instructor as I had a good rapport going with him, but it was not meant to be, he was assigned to 2 small children who were ready for lessons and the rest of my family were not on the snow yet.

Dave looking the part

They (Dave, Mitch and Jas) finally appeared and we were assigned Roberto, an Italian Canadian, about 60 years old.  He was charming and a bit of a ladies man, LOL.  We had a bit of a shaky start as there was no designated space for us, and we tried to share the use of the "Discovery" nursery slopes but got in their way, so after a few tentative first runs, we were taken on out first ski lift ride, a magic carpet to our first gentle slope.  This was after we had been taught how to stop/ plough, turn right and left. We were taught, but this does not mean we could do it!

Looking good
I shan't bore you anymore with the lessons but will say that I fell about 3 times, no injuries, as did Dave, Mitch and Jas. Mitch crashed into some small trees, Jas went skiing off after making a left turn and carried on downhill, the turn failing to stop her, she looked natural, as though she had it sussed. She said after that she was scared and finally decided to fall over as she didn't know another way to stop and she was veering towards the carpet!

Jasmine on skis

The end of our lesson came too soon, and we were let off to practice. We did so, but decided to end and maybe ski later as it was nearly 5pm and we had missed lunch to get to the lesson on time. We still needed to get our stuff to our room, and then find something to eat.  We were advised by reception to ring the list of restaurants before we set off, to see what the waiting times were. I made the decision to just set out and try our luck. Now, had we been told that reservations really should be made as we are very busy, unusually so, we would have called the restaurants. To our dismay, we could not get on anywhere, some had no tables, some had 1-1.5 hours wait. For a starving family, this was not good.  Finally, in exasperation, after being told there were no tables available for the 4th time, I asked the Maitre D, what to do if I wanted to get fed... she suggested Firehall Pizza as they did not take reservations but had a buzzer system, first come first served. Off we trotted in the snow to Firehall, and as we approached it, we saw people leaving with take-outs so, I said, lets do that, take some pizza out and eat in our room. Luckily for us, when I approached the bar to place my order, I noticed there were 3 bar stools available, so asked the barmaid if we could eat at the bar. She said yes, so I grabbed the 3 seats, called Mitch on his cell as he had gone outside whilst I was getting the take out.  I knew another seat would be available soon, or I would just throw someone off theirs!  Big serving of Nachos, 3 pizzas, 2 apple pies and several drinks later, we felt so much better and walked back to our room. Mitch wanted to do some night time skiing, but he looked so tired, but was not admitting to this, of course. We decided to have an earlyish night as they had snowboarding camp in the morning.

Dave crashed out at about 8! The kids and I stayed up to watch Back to the Future Part 2, then lights out.   Our room was small for 4 people, a queen bed and a double sofa bed. It had a little kitchenette and a small dining table and was en-suite. It was a noisy night, with the Grand Georgian at full capacity, we just happened to be opposite a group of noisy teenagers, who spent some of the night riding the luggage trolley! I was on the sofa bed with Jasmine, which was lovely as she cuddled up to me, and she's very cuddable...

At the bar at Firehall

The uncomfy sofa bed

2nd day dawned early, as we had to get our rental equipment from the ski valet to be returned, we were confused as to how many days rental we had paid for. There was the added complication of the kids snowboarding lessons being in South Base and our equipment was currently rented from the village base, what to do, what to do? Sigh, all this uncertainty as what to do for the best and to get to South Base to be in time for the lessons were marring our experience.  I was getting really stressed, and though I knew this wouldn't help anything, I couldn't help myself, all part of wanting to be in control, I guess.  Blooming uptight, no wonder my arteries are tight and I have high blood pressure, not a minutes peace or let go, even when I am supposed to be on holiday!! All I can say is that, thank goodness for the 4 months of yoga lessons I got for Christmas.  If this is one thing I would like to change for myself, it would be this, to be happy to have less control, one can't be in control of everything, and I should accept that and be happy...... one day, not tomorrow, next week or even next month, one day.

Chris and Mitch

What happened with the equipment dilemma? Well, we returned everything, and decided to pick up the rentals at South Base, went to Starbuck's for a take out breakfast, while we waited for the shuttle to South Base.  We got there in plenty of time, got our equipment and had plenty of time to get the kids to their lesson.  Confusion again as to where to meet for the lesson...more stress, but all's well that end's well.  We got them to the lesson on time, they had a great experience, Mitch was confident enough to try the green runs after 1 hour 45 mins instructions, Jasmine could snowboard but not as confidently as Mitch.

Snowboarding lesson

While they had their lesson, Dave and I hit the green slopes on our own, Dave unfortunately fell forwards, landing heavily on his front and onto the handle of one of the ski poles, ouch! We tried the gentler slopes and I was happy and confident, but Dave was feeling a tad shaky after his fall. He went on to fall forward twice more, the final time when we were disembarking the chair lift onto the tallest green run, that we talked ourselves into doing.  On a chair lift with our skis on and poles in our hands, we felt nervous, as it rose up and we were hoisted up into the air, feeling exhilarated at the same time.  We were  then worrying about how we were going to get off in one piece, and ski down what looked like a mountain, even though it was only a small hill, hehehehe nervously. We had no choice really, ski down or walk down I guess.

The moment of truth, will I make it down in one piece ?

I challenged myself, with fear in my heart, and anxiety as to whether I was going to survive this, I set off down the Big Baby, feeling like a baby, realising too late that perhaps we should have had a few more lessons before attempting this. Dave by my side, we set off, I skied down, ploughing mostly, trying to steer off the steeper areas, trying to go slow but I gained so much momentum and speed that no matter what I did, I was going faster and faster...I tried to turn, plough, whatever but I wasn't slowing down, and I wanted to stop as I was not in control.... yes, yes, that control thing again. So, I fell onto my bottom and slid a little way down the hill. I then could not gain my balance to get both skis on and trudged down the hill in my boots, and eventually skied the last bit down. Dave fell twice on the way down, but he didn't walk any of the way down. At the bottom of the hill, he said, he'd had enough, his chest was hurting too much, he felt like he'd cracked a rib.

kids ski school

Whilst Dave and I were on the slopes, we couldn't but help notice how amazingly easy skiing seemed to the children, some toddler size, but so confident on their little skis, whizzing past us, no ski poles, being told what to do by instructors or their parents, all seemingly effortless.  Oh, the joys of being a child...

Big Baby, we skied down this one

We collected the kids after their lesson, Dave and Jas returned their equipment, Mitch and I kept ours as Mitch wanted to snowboard after lunch and also do some night time boarding, so yours truly had to accompany him on her skis!

Mitch looking cool
Mitch and I had a great afternoon on the slopes and when it got dark, we carried on on the slopes, Mitch really enjoying going on the chair lift and boarding down the bigger slopes. Jas and Dave went to the Plunge, an open air water park, with deep pools, slides and a hot tub.

snoozing all the way home

We left Blue Mountains after dinner, where Mitchell announced that he now,"feels accomplished!" We arrived back home just after 22.20.... a wonderful time had by all despite the aches, pains and stress, no pain, no gain? You bet, so much gain, so happy to have done it, I can ski..... yippeeee, never thought this would happen, but it has, thank you Canada for making this possible...one ticked off the bucket list for Dave too.

Happy New Year......2011, here we come...

Hair Raisin!

A hair raising experience at the Ontario Science Centre yesterday, a show about electricity, hands on with style!

We spent a lovely afternoon at the Science Centre and learnt about all sorts, saw 2 shows, one on fire and combustion, the second on electricity, both very visual and great effects, in a controlled environment.  The audience looked enthralled, well, the kids did. Dave and I on the other hand felt they were good, but we are getting too old for all this, lol. Miserable lot we are. The thing that was getting to me was that I knew that I knew the answers to certain questions that were asked by the scientist presenting the show. Somewhere in the far flung recesses of my brain called a memory, the knowledge was there, but could I prise in out of hibernation? Could I heck... once the answer was revealed though, the light bulb lit up like a beacon, oh yes, how could I forget? Almost like an Eureka moment! I am getting old, what is not used is lost, and lost it will remain till someone jogs my memory. I suppose I should be thankful that my memory can still be jogged.

The Ontario Science Centre is one of the best science centres we have visited, it's on 6 levels.  As it was our first visit, we didn't realise that there were escalators as well as elevators that took you to the different floors.  We wanted to get to level 6, for one of the shows, found some elevators, we were on Level 1, and when it arrived, it was going down, so we waited for one that was going up. We waited and waited and watched the numbers light up, and the lift that was going down, was on level 2, then 3 then 6, how did we miss that one when it was on it's way back up??? Puzzled. Anyhow, another lift finally arrived, it too was going down, and we decided to board it, go down then back up again.  So, we packed in this lift, must have been about 15 of us in it, and the lift went down, to Level 2, then 3 ..... penny dropped, the Level 6 was 5 floors below level 1, we had assumed that the floors went up!

Jasmine was invited up on stage for  an experiment, they needed someone tall to pedal a bike that would generate enough electricity to light up 4 light bulbs, she did really well ..

The Van de Graaf generator was the show stealer as was the lightning maker, and we were all invited for a hair makeover at the end.

A festive picture to end, some outdoor Christmas decs that we saw on our Boxing Day walk

hungover and deflated after Xmas.. haha

Blue Mountain Ski Resort

Blue Mountain
We went to Fairview Mall to check out the ski wear in Sears and The Bay.... Boxing Day sales, I was expecting hoards of people in both those departmental shops, but they were surprisingly quiet. Quiet in terms of shoppers and shop assistants. We were trying to get Dave a ski jacket and snow pants and looked at the racks for bargains... prices ranged from $89.90 to $480- which was the bee's knees.  Not having gone skiing or bought any ski wear apart from when we shopped for the kids, we looked out for labels that had thinsulate, water resistant, breathable, wicking etc.  Some of the jackets did not have any such labels, we then questioned whether they were ski jackets.  We were like the blind leading the blind!  After checking out what was available in both stores, we decided to see what else was available in the mall.

Here were the shoppers... they were queueing to get into certain shops, namely Hollister and Aritizia, shopper control was in place and shoppers were being allowed in only when someone exited the shop! The queues were easily 100m long, snaking along the mezzanine floor above, people looking down on us as they queued. I have not shopped in there before, and was wondering what the attraction was, ok, great 40-70% off, but to queue for more than 30 mins to get in? This was at 10 am as well, and the shops opened at 7am.  Gap had an interesting concept, if you bought before 12pm, you got 40% off, 30% before 3pm and 25% after till closing. A lot of shoppers in there.

The girls were queuing for this, I guess

Clothes from Aritizia
We went to Aeropostle as I knew what I wanted to get, it was buzzing, with shoppers and staff. Queues for the till were reasonable for a sale day.  The thing is with the more popular shops is, if you are queuing up to an hour to get in, what are the queues for paying going to be like?? Is anything really worth waiting all that time for? It reminded me of people queuing for food aid... those people have no choice, queue or go hungry, but queuing for a clothes shop?? Not me, I'm glad to say.  I can live without material things.
Snaking queue to get into a shop!

I hope one day I will be helping out in queues like this one
There were no ski shops at the mall, so we decided to go back to the Bay and finally found something suitable price and utility wise, got the jacket, pants and gloves. The Bay was having an additional 40% off all sale items, so it was a good time to buy essentials and maybe some treats, but having treated ourselves to a night away at a ski resort, we stuck to the essentials till we got to the cashier.  He was a lovely man called Nigel who was serving at the Polo Ralph Lauren department, and so Dave had a Polo jumper and I got a Bay Credit Card... I need to build up my credit history so, applied for it and got an extra 10% off my total bill.  The receipt said, saved $188.20 today, and the total to pay was $250.40.... not bad, not bad at all.  Still I could have saved $250.40, had I not stepped into the bay at all, but Dave did need the ski things. The credit limit on the card was $300, so I think it will be my coffee credit card, one that I use to pay for coffee. The APR on it?? 29.9%, so, no leaving any balances on this card! The card earns points to be redeemed later alongside other benefits, but am not sure it's worth the 29.9% interest on balances......

APR of 29.9%, yikes!

Similar to the outfit Dave got, the man was not for sale!

Merry Christmas One and All

Christmas tree at the Eaton Centre

Merry Christmas everyone from Thornhill, Ontario. Hope you all had a great time, either with family, friends or both, or just having some time off if you don't celebrate Christmas. This greeting is probably late for most, but as there are 12 days of Christmas to go, I hope it's not too late.

Maracas 24/12/2009

It's been a funny year for us this year, we have not had Christmas day on our own for a very long time.  As a family, we have always travelled to Dave's parents' or they have come to us.  Last year, was the 1st Christmas without my father-in-law, who passed away in June, 2009.  My mum-in-law, Janet, travelled with Karen (Dave's sister) and her family out to Trinidad to spend an equatorial Christmas with us.  We spent Christmas Eve in Maracas, on the beach and went back again on Boxing Day when Janet braved the waves and went in the sea. It was lovely to have a hot Christmas.

This year could not be more different, we had a white Christmas, the first ever to be experienced by the kids and I, and Dave cannot remember the last time it snowed at Christmas time in the UK.  We have had no visitors for Christmas year.  It was a different Christmas for the family back home too.  Janet had Karen and Alice(Karen's daughter) over at hers for Christmas. David(Karen's son) christmassed in London, and Tony(Karen's now ex-husband), well I don't know how Tony spent his Christmas.

Christmas is a time of happiness and joy, a time of goodwill and cheer. I did not feel it that much this year. Bah, Humbug! I miss having an extended family Christmas, it makes it more meaningful when you celebrate Christmas with most of your loved ones.  Of course extended family celebrations can be fraught with all sort of stresses, like cooking a big meal for everyone, wanting to please everyone's tastes, dealing with over indulgence of alcohol and the behaviour that accompanies this.  Still, when everything's said and done, it beats spending Christmas on your own! hehehe

Christmas was not a big thing for me, as my family at home did not celebrate it. We were Buddhists, and therefore we never exchanged presents, did not have roast turkey at home or even a Christmas tree. What we did was celebrate with our friends who were Christians and had 'open houses' where they served food, drinks and treats all day, with friends dropping by to wish them a Merry Christmas.  It wasn't till I went to the UK that I started celebrating Christmas in my own home.

Christmas took on a greater meaning when the kids were born, I wanted them to have all the things I missed as a child. I know I should be teaching them the meaning of Christmas, that of one celebrating the birth of Jesus, and to a certain extent I did. I didn't want them to just think of Christmas as a time where a man with white hair and a white beard all dressed in red would come down the chimney and leave them presents if they have been good that year.  Though I did use this as a tool to get my kids to do things! Santa's watching you, I would say, which was true!

HO HO HO
The fun side of Christmas took over though, with Advent calendars with chocs or little gifts, leading up to Christmas with an over indulgence of presents, food and treats consumed over the festive season.  Actually, I did not even know what an advent calendar was when I first arrived in the UK, never ever having had one in my life before I left home.  I somehow did not see anything exciting about opening a window and getting a small piece of chocolate for my troubles.  This year, I got the kids a Lego calendar, and the kids absolutely loved waking up in the morning, to see what little treasure they got for that day.  In the past, they had calendars and forgot to open the windows for a few days, these calendars were ones containing chocolates. I would forget to remind them, and some years, Christmas would arrive and the calendar still had 5-10 unopened windows!

PS3!
We have again indulged the kids, both Mitchell and Jasmine have had expensive gifts with a few smaller gifts thrown in, not to mention the gifts from the UK.  Dave too has been very generous and has bought me a 4 month unlimited yoga class pass at Yogatree amongst other presents.  This is a great gift, for one, it will help me burn off the calories I have consumed over the last few months, and it will also be good for my mental health.  Dave got some items that he asked for and we all got some pyjama bottoms!

Jas with Amazon Parcel
Now, for the bad part, I was bad mother of the year again, as I was shouting at the children by 10 o'clock, arghhh. It may have been justified but I still feel very bad for shouting at them on Christmas day.  I apologised and Dave reassured me by saying he shouted at them too! 2 wrongs do not make a right.  Jasmine came up to me and said she deserved being told off, and I said she didn't as it was Christmas day. What a lousy mum I am sometimes, but, hey, I am not perfect, and don't worry, I am not beating myself up about it.

Turkey lurkey
Dinner was a lovely roast turkey crown and all the trimmings and Dave had a lovely mushroom loaf that he made himself.  We had arranged to skype Janet and eat our Christmas dinner together, us at 1pm and they at 6pm, as we were 5 hours behind.  It was all planned and timed, and the cooking was going well. Mitch had table tennis coaching today, despite the fact it was Christmas. Madness, right? Oh well, off he went with Dave, and I was expecting them back at about 12.30pm. This came and went and no Dave and Mitch.  It was getting close to 1pm before they got back. I was slightly cross as we were meant to skype the family at 1pm and everything was ready, the starters had gone cold.  In addition, I had set the smoke alarm off several times, it's too blooming sensitive, I only have to open the oven for a while whilst cooking to set it off! All sorts was racing thru my mind whilst I was waiting for them to appear, crazy as I am. I was wondering if they may have had an accident as it was cold and there was patches of black ice about on the roads and I hadn't heard from them. Silly me.

Mushroom Loaf, yummy

"Where have you been, do you know what time it is?" greeted Dave as he walked in thru the door. It turns out Mitch was offered extra coaching at the end, which caused the delay in getting home.  "What can I do to help?" says Dave.  With the meal cooked, table laid, not a single thing! As I served up the vegetables, I said to Dave, put some butter on the vegetables. I carry on carving the turkey and serving, Dave goes to the fridge, gets the butter out and fills the butter dish, and places the dish on the table. No butter on the veg though!  I was definitely not having a good day.... I know, I know, I should be thankful that I have my loved ones with me, I have cooked a delicious meal, I have presents to open etc etc.... I should chill out more, not get so uptight about trivial things, it's not the end of the world if there's not butter on the veg, in fact, it's probably a good thing.   The skype thing did not work, due to technical difficulties at the UK end, we did not manage to have Christmas dinner together.  Thank goodness I have yoga lessons for the next 4 months!

Anyhow, we have had a lovely relaxed day of eating, drinking, enjoying our gifts and each others company, no more cross words nor upsets after lunch...Bliss....as usual, a lot of leftovers as I had cooked too much, as always, sure could do with a cookbook called 101 ways with leftover turkey for the next few days!

Pudding in flames
I hope you all have had a lovely time too, and enjoying some time off... we will be hitting the shops tomorrow, Dave needs some ski clothes as we are planning to go skiing over the next week.  The shops are having a huge sale tomorrow, with some opening their doors at 6am! H&M will be open at 7am and the first 100 in the queue will get an extra $100 off their shopping bill!.  I have visions of people queuing from tonight to be the first 100.  Good luck to them.
